Archives

In the month of March, there was a gathering of Archivists from throughout the UK and Northern Ireland at Netherurd and I was lucky to secure a place. We were fortunate that the Archive team cam up from CHQ in London to take the training.

It was a very challenging, informative and enjoyable weekend meeting up with Archivists I had met on previous occasions and also meeting others. During meals or in the different sessions we had, it was very interesting to hear the wealth of experience these people had over their long number years in guiding.

During the weekend our sessions included a Quiz on guiding over the years, an update on the proposed plans for Story Gathering, talking about Exhibitions, information on Copyright and Uniform challenges. We had the opportunity of a Question and Answer session and also a Perception of the weekend. During one of the sessions, we also heard from the different Counties of their plans for the forthcoming Centenary Celebrations which everyone was looking forward to.

Over the past year, the team at the Scottish Archives in Elmbank Street, Glasgow, have been busier than usual preparing the old uniforms which have been donated in readiness for the launch of the Centenary of Girlguiding in Scotland. The uniforms will also be on display at various events being held throughout the year to celebrate the 100 Years of Guiding. At our own County launch in the Lagoon Arena in Paisley, girls wore these uniforms for us to see the changes which have taken place over the years.

If you wish to study the changes in Brownie and Guide uniforms over the years, the book ”Guiding thought Time” (published 2004) shows Brownie uniforms from 1914 and Guide uniforms from 1909 to present day.

Throughout the County, each Division will be putting on a display looking back of the years of guiding to mark this momentous occasion, and it is hoped that all members will take the opportunity of going along to the venues to view the displays.
