DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD SCHEME
There are currently 53 Young Leaders, Rangers and young adult Guiders working towards a Duke of Edinburgh Award in the County, 13 at Bronze, 16 at Silver and 24 at Gold. In the period January 2008 - August 2009, 14 girls completed their Bronze Award, 16 their Silver Award and 3 their Gold Award. The three were Kim Kermath who was presented with her Gold certificate at Holyrood Palace by HRH Duke of Edinburgh in June 09. Fiona Laird who finished in May 09 and Carolyn Finlay who finished in July 09.
All the expeditions went well this year there was only one Bronze group and one Silver group as many of the girls took a year out from walking for exam work. The weather was fair except for one very wet Saturday in May when we retreated to the warmth of the Cornalees’ visitor centre to dry out for an hour to invigorate us for the cold nights camping ahead. The Bronze final group were privileged to see inside old Hunterston Castle home of the Clan Hunter since the 13th Century. The Silver expedition went to the Isle of Bute where they visited several archaeological sites and fantastic Mount Stuart House.
The girls also had some interesting personal project choices this year including helping at a local hospice and caring for rescued dogs at a kennels.
The Award scheme is open to anyone between the ages of 14-25, if you are up for a extra challenge for 2010 then contact us for more information or look at www.dofe.org.uk
