PAGGS CAMP, BONALY, EDINBURGH

The 12th International PAGGS Camp was held at Bonaly Scout Centre, Edinburgh from 3rd to 13th August with Paisley Division Guides and District Scouts as hosts.

Delegations came from Apeldoorn, Holland, Gagny, France, Gladsaxe, Denmark, Sutton, England and Pardubice, Czech Republic and there were 240 people in attendance at the camp.

The Guides and Scouts had a marvellous time and enjoyed being the hosts for the event. The Participants arrived on 3rd August with the opening Ceremony being on the 4th August.

We were very fortunate with the weather with the worst day being when we visited East Fortune Airfield when it rained and the camp photograph was taken in the hangar with everyone standing under Concorde. Other visits were made to Edinburgh Castle, Leith Waterworld, and Edinburgh City Centre.

Onsite activities included Crafts, Climbing Wall, Archery, Branding, Water Games and a Water Slide which proved to be very popular and there were some very wet campers.

Offsite there were hikes and the 16/18 age group had a Challenge to cross the Forth Road Bridge. They also had an incident hike in the dark.

Campfire entertainment was great with each Country providing us with many laughs. In the evening we also had a disco, Karaoke.

International Day saw many visitors including families and friends of which there were a number of Guiders and Scouters. I was delighted that so many Guiders from the County took the time to pop through and visit the camp. In the evening there was a Ceilidh with music from the Wherries.

A French Scout made her promise at Camp and it was very interesting to learn about their promise ceremony.

The highlight was the Closing Ceremony and this was taken by the Bonaly Camp Staff. There was a campfire with glow sticks and candles and afterwards we processed by candle light down to the Central Field so that the flags could be lowered for the last time. It proved to be a magnificent sight and the PAGGS Flag handed over to the Danish Delegation as they will be the hosts of the next camp. After the flags the ceremony finished with a spectacular firework display.

My thanks go to all those who supported us before during and after the camp with special thanks to the Committee and Scottish Delegation Leaders. Our grateful thanks go to Bonaly Camp Staff and their Fellowship for everything that they did for us.
